Dr. rer.nat. Lutz Schubert

Deputy Chair PDS

Efficient code execution is not (just) determined by the algorithm and the clock speed of the CPU. The execution environment (such as the Operating System) contributes to a large extent performance factor by wrong alignment to the hardware infrastructure, execution strategies targeting at different application cases, isolating resources etc. The research group around Lutz Schubert focuses on efficient distributed and parallel execution of applications on heterogeneous systems. Together with the Brandenburg University of Technology, Cottbus-Senftenberg the group maintains a highly efficient, distributed Operating System, MyThOS.

Lutz Schubert furthermore is engaged in methods for modelling and analysis in digital archaeology. Archaeology and humanities still pose many issues to computer science that cannot be addressed by traditional IT and therefore fall into the domain of complex systems. This includes modelling of non-deterministic events from highly limited data, such as reasoning over possible interpretations from excavation data. Human behaviour is unpredictable, but constrained by technical and physical limitations which determines the scope of plausible actions. Archaeology provides piecewise evidence of consequences of such actions which leads to a highly complex chain of potential cause and effects.
